Description

Mata’Utu Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is the most prominent religious landmark in Wallis and Futuna and a recognised national monument of France. Built from hand-chiselled blue volcanic stone and coral blocks, construction began in 1951 under the guidance of the Marists, the French Roman Catholic order that introduced Catholicism to the islands. Dominating the centre of Mata’Utu, the cathedral features two imposing rectangular towers framing a blue Maltese cross, the royal emblem of Wallis, and as the seat of the Diocese of Wallis and Futuna, it stands as a powerful symbol of faith, history and European Pacific architectural fusion.

Highlights

  • Imposing blue volcanic stone cathedral dominating Mata’Utu
  • Distinctive Maltese cross symbol linked to Wallis royalty
  • European church design with Pacific materials
