Description

Lake Lalolalo is Wallis’ most famous natural attraction, a perfectly circular volcanic crater lake on the east coast of the island that drops at least 80 m (262 ft) deep and measures around 450 m (1,476 ft) across. Formed within an ancient volcano, Lake Lalolalo feels otherworldly, with sheer crater walls, dense virgin rainforest and an atmosphere shaped as much by legend as geology. The dark waters of Lake Lalolalo are home to endemic blind eels adapted to the sulphurous freshwater, while fruit bats glide overhead at dusk, and local stories surrounding the lake’s spiritual power add an unmistakable sense of mystery to this iconic Wallisian landmark.

Highlights

  • Perfectly circular volcanic crater lake with dramatic depth
  • Endemic blind eels and surrounding untouched rainforest
  • Strong local legends and one of Wallis’ most atmospheric sites
