Description

Kolonui Fort and the Residence of Taleitumu is one of the most important archaeological and historical sites in Wallis and Futuna, built around 1450 during the expansion of the Tuʻi Tonga Empire and recognised as the last Tongan stronghold on Uvea. Surrounded by imposing basalt stone defensive walls with controlled entry points, the fort preserves a rare snapshot of pre-European power and conflict in the Pacific. At the heart of Kolonui Fort lies Talietumu, a raised marae with a distinctive circular form set within manicured grounds, making Kolonui Fort widely regarded as the best preserved Tongan fort anywhere in the world and an essential stop when exploring Wallis.

Highlights

  • Exceptionally preserved Tongan fortress dating back to the 15th century
  • Basalt stone defensive walls and controlled entrances
  • Central Talietumu marae within landscaped grounds
