Description

Kalevalio is a modest yet profoundly important religious and historical site on the south coast of Wallis, marking the exact place where Monsignor Pompallier, Father Bataillon, Father Chanel and their companions first landed and knelt to recite an Ave Maria. This moment at Kalevalio signalled the beginning of Catholicism in Wallis and its spread throughout the Pacific, giving the site deep spiritual meaning for the local community. A commemorative cross erected in 1887 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Catholicism on the island, and although Kalevalio is understated in appearance, its quiet waterfront setting carries a powerful sense of origin, reflection and faith.

Highlights

  •  Historic landing site where Catholic missionaries first arrived in Wallis
  •  Commemorative cross marking the foundation of Catholicism on the island
  •  Peaceful waterfront location with strong spiritual significance
