Description

The Chapel of St Pierre Chanel on Mt Mauga is a secluded religious site on Wallis Island, dedicated to Saint Pierre Chanel, the patron saint of Oceania. Built on a forested knoll above Kolopopo village, the chapel was envisioned in the 1940s by Monsignor Poncet as a memorial to Saint Pierre Chanel’s visit to Wallis and has since become a place of quiet devotion and reflection. Each year on 28 August, pilgrims walk up Mt Mauga to the Chapel of St Pierre Chanel for a special pilgrimage and mass, followed by a traditional katoaga feast, while on ordinary days, visitors come for the peaceful atmosphere and elevated views across the island’s interior.

Highlights

  •  Secluded chapel dedicated to Saint Pierre Chanel in a forest setting
  •  Annual pilgrimage and feast held every 28 August
  •  Elevated viewpoints offering island interior views
